How it works
Deciding to start therapy takes courage and looking for a therapist can be daunting. I’ve outlined below the process you can expect from getting in touch to our first session.
Arrange a consultation
You can contact me through my contact form, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or phoning 07735 887 704. I’ll get back to you as soon as possible to answer your questions and arrange a mutually convenient time for our initial consultation.
In this initial consultation we'll talk about what brings you to therapy and explore your hopes and expectations. It will be a chance for you to get a sense of how I work and whether I am the right counsellor for you, and for me to answer any questions or concerns you may have. It will be a shorter session than usual (40 minutes instead of 50) and cost £50.
If I feel I am not able to support you in the best way possible, I will always endeavour to refer you to another therapist or service that might be better placed to do so. (See my FAQs for why I might decide not to work with you.)
Book a session
I always suggest taking a day or two to reflect on whether you would like to have ongoing sessions with me. If we decide to continue working together, we'll set up a regular appointment, which normally takes place on the same day, at the same time, every week. Sessions last for 50 minutes and cost £60.
This first session will give you space to talk further about the issue(s) you want to explore in therapy. I value your autonomy and expertise in yourself, and as part of this session will talk with you about your preferences for how we work together. There isn’t a right or wrong and it’s absolutely okay if you’re unsure, and if your preferences change during therapy. Building a collaborative therapeutic relationship is essential from the start and people find different things useful, so this is a way for me to meet you where you’re at.
